TWO EXCELLENT WINS FROM THEIR LAST TWO GAMES AGAINST GOMERSAL & FARSLEY MADE SURE THAT THE MOORENDERS MOVED UP THE TABLE AND AWAY FROM THE DANGER OF POSSIBLE RELEGATION.

Sunday, 6th September 2009.

GOMERSAL. 117 All Out. (2-Points)
Matthew Garside 28*, Richard Gould 23, Zahir Hussain 21.
Ian Wood 9-1-37-4, Mark Cummins 6-3-3-3,
John Wood 7-1-10-2.

CLECKHEATON. 123 for 5 Wkts. (15-Points)
Mark Cummins 37no, John Wood 30.
Robert Burton 9-1-35-2.

After the team's blank date on the Saturday, and the league table showing Cleckheaton to be just 10 points above the drop zone, this was now a must win game for the side. The high scoring game against Gomersal earlier in the season had resulted in our opponents winning, but this was a different game.

The home side, deciding to bat, were soon in serious trouble after a useful start. Opener Richard Gould was looking in good form until John Wood induced him into a false shot; and then in the space of 5 overs 43 for 1 became 47 for 5. From this point it was downhill all the way for Gomersal as Ian Wood (4 for 37) and Mark Cummins (3-3) made serious inroads.

Although their final total of 117 was nowhere near enough Cleckheaton were made to work hard for their runs, needing 43 overs to reach their target. However, unflappable opener Cummins remained undefeated on 37 as the visitors won by 5 wickets in collecting 15 valuable points.

Saturday, 12th September 2009

CLECKHEATON 185 for 9 Wkts. (18-Points)
John Wood 71, Craig Thornton 35*, Ian Nicholson 23.
Lorenzo Ingram 15-2-43-3, Chris Henry 14-3-56-3.

FARSLEY. 142 All Out. (5-Points)
Chris Henry 52, Robert Thornton 38*, Lorenzo Ingram 24.
Ian Wood 12-3-48-7, Iain Wardlaw 12-5-28-3.

Although mathematically safe from relegation the Moorenders, for their own satisfaction, wanted to end the season with a win, which despite a few scares along the way was in the end comfortably achieved.

After deciding to bat skipper/opener John Wood was fortunately in fine form as the other early batsmen succumbed to the bowling of Chris Henry and Robert Thornton. At one point the home side were struggling at 32 for 3, but with the help of Ian Nicholson (23) the score was pushed to 97 before both were out in the space of an over. Wood was always leading from the front. When the total had reached 50 only 3 runs had been contributed by the rest of the batsmen, and when out at 97 he had scored 71 on the runs. With the further loss of Ian Wood with the score on 100 for 6, Cleckheaton were looking vulnerable until a solid unbeaten 35 from Craig Thornton saw them finally finish on 185 for 9.

When Farsley's batting dramatically collapsed to Wardlaw and Ian Wood, they looked down and out at 57 for 8 after 17 overs, but then bowling fireworks were replaced by batting fireworks as Farsley's 9 & 10, the fast bowling pair of Thornton and Henry began to enjoy themselves in a 9th wicket stand of 75. Thornton was still there at the end, undefeated on 38, but Henry with 3 fours and 6 sixes took just 20 balls to reach a quickfire half century. The pair even looked like forging an unlikely win until Wood, re-introduced to the attack, took the last 2 wickets to finish with the impressive figures of 7 for 48 leaving Farsley still 43 runs short of their target. Wood's bowling partner finished with 3 for 28 from 12 overs as the season was finished in style leaving the Moorenders in 7th position in the division.

In the 1st Round of 2010 Priestley Cup & Shield, Cleckheaton have been drawn against neighbours Spen Victoria.

AFTER REACHING THE SEMI-FINAL "FLOODLIT" STAGE OF THE "DYSON TWENTY/20 COMPETITION", CLECKHEATON LOST BY 5 WICKETS TO THE EVENTUAL WINNERS PUDSEY ST LAWRENCE.

CLECKHEATON'S SEMI-FINAL TEAM. (Photo published by kind permission of Charlie Perry)
Back: Neil Nicholson, Mark Cummins, Craig Thornton, Iain Wardlaw, Ian Nicholson & Craig Blackburn.
Front: Mally Nicholson, Tom Pringle, Asif Khan, Shaun Howe & Joe Bowman.

CLECKHEATON. 148 for 5 Wkts. (20 Overs)
Mally Nicholson 34, Craig Thornton 29no, Mark Cummins 29no.

PUDSEY ST LAWRENCE. 150 for 5 Wkts (18.1-Overs)
Alex Stead 77no, Gareth Clough 24 (from 9 balls), Mark Robertshaw 19.
Mark Cummins 4-0-24-2.

Batting first with a pink ball in the half-light proved a disadvantage to the Moorenders; as it did the following evening to East Bierley. Cleckheaton, despite the early loss Asif Khan, made a quick start through Mally and Ian Nicholson. By the 6th over when Ian was out, the score had been pushed to 57, but after Mally was out for 34 at 61 the innings lost its momentum as the light became more difficult. A lack of boundaries (56 of their 148 runs came from 11 fours and 2 sixes) was the main cause of Cleckheaton's disappointing total. Unbeaten scores of 29 from both Craig Thornton and Mark Cummins, in a stand of 68, finally gave Pudsey a total to chase although the batting side had to thank the bowlers for contributing 38 extra to their cause. Spectators almost saw the spectacle of "eight wides" being called when the ball slipping from James Smith's hand as he bowled nearly reached the boundary behind the wicket without bouncing.

Opener Alex Stead spearheaded Pudsey St Lawrence's pursuit with an unbeaten 77, but the innings that really turned the match belonged to Gareth Clough who had hit 24 runs from just 8 balls before finally having his stumps re-arranged by Cummins. Further scores from Mark Robertshaw (19) and Chris Marsden (12no) saw the "Saints" home with 11 balls to spare. Cummins was the pick of Cleckheaton's bowlers. He took 2 wickets in 3 balls before finishing with 2 for 24 from 4 overs.

In the second Semi-Final on the Wednesday evening between Bradford & Bingley and East Bierley, Bierley, batting first, struggled to reach 131, a total which the Wagon Laner's reached in the last over of their innings.

In the final on Thursday night, Cleckheaton's conquerers Pudsey St Lawrence scored a comfortable win against the home side, thanks to the pair that carried them to victory against Cleckheaton. Their total of 223 owed much to a 2nd wicket stand of 143 between Stead (97 from 50 balls) and Clough (64 from 32). Their score proved far too much for Bradford & Bingley to overhaul and they finished 45 runs short on 178 despite the benevolence of the "Saints" bowlers who contributed a further 40 extras to the 38 they had previously conceded against the Moorenders. Mark Robertshaw's 4 for 21 from 4 overs proved to be the best bowling figures of the tournament, although Bradford & Bingley's Chris Thompson with 6 wickets in his 2 games was the highest wicket taker. In the three matches, he provided the only maiden overs to be bowled, and certainly the most economical analysis thanks to his figures of 4-2-4-1 against East Bierley.

Top wicket-takers in the competition were the Cleckheaton pair of Tom Pringle and Ian Nicholson with 15 and 13 wickets respectively. Ian also finished high in the batting list after scoring 183 runs.

2nd TEAM FOCUS.

ALTHOUGH DEFEATED IN THE LAST MATCH OF THE SEASON AGAINST UNDERCLIFFE, CLECKHEATON MAINTAIN THEIR 1st DIVISION STATUS.

Saturday, 12th September 2009.

UNDERCLIFFE. 179 for 5 Wkts (49 overs) (16-Points)
Liam Brearley 90, Craig Smith 28, Chris Burns 27.
Stuart Houlbrook 15-3-41-3.

CLECKHEATON 172 for 9 Wkts (51-overs) (4-Pts)
Masaver Masadiq 32, Chris Dyer 31, Ikram Ul Haq 24no, Chris Dobson 23, Gareth Jowett 23.
Andy Wlsdon 15-2-29-3.
.
In a game of tactics, Cleckheaton finally kept their 1st Division status by just 1 point. Going into the game with a 13 point lead over their rivals, it was not a case of Cleckheaton winning or losing but of making sure they were still at least 1 point ahead at the end of the match. After reaching 3 batting points, Undercliffe declared at 179 for 5 after 49 overs knowing that a further wicket for the visitors would give them an additional bonus point. Cleckheaton were given 51 overs to reach the home team's score, and for most of the innings they looked like doing just that, but towards the end tactics decreed it more important not to lose further wickets than actually win the game. The patience of Cleckheaton's batsmen finally won the day. The game entered its last over with the visitors needing only 8 runs to win the with still four wickets remaining, but a possible win was sacrificed as the ensuing maiden over saw them maintain their 1st division place.

Wrenthorpe Warriors beat JCT600 Sovereigns" in a bowl-out.
.
This season's Thompson, Davis & Co Ltd Floodlit Twenty/20 Trophy turned out to be a disappointing affair. The only game to finish was the semi final tie on the Tuesday evening between the home side Cleckheaton Crusaders and Wrenthorpe Warriors. The quality of the floodlighting had been improved yet again and Wrenthorpe batting first comfortably rattling up 178 for 4 wickets from their 20 overs with a 34 ball fifty from West Indian Tonito Willett and useful contributions from Gary Fellows, David Paynter, and Rob McFarlane. When Cleckheaton replied they were only able to reach a total of 151 for 8 despite a spirited stand of 69 for the 2nd wicket between Asif Khan (50 from 30 balls) and Mally Nicholson (37). At the fall of Mally's wicket at 119 the home team were still in the game with a real winning chance. A tumble of wickets with only Ian Wood (17) managing to reach double figures put them behind the ante as they finished 27 runs short of victory.

The final started on time, but after the JCT600 Sovereigns' innings had been brought to an end by rain the tie was decided on a bowl out which saw the Wrenthorpe Warriors finally defeat the Bradford League side 1-0 after both sides had contrived to miss the stumps 28 times before Neil Gill hit the wickets with a perfect off-break to take the trophy for his team. Before the weather had intervened the JCT600 Sovereigns had reached 53 for 2 in the 6th over with Alex Stead having scored an aggressive 37 which included 3 fours and 3 sixes.

CALDERDALE & KIRKLEES
CRICKET HERITAGE LOTTERY PROJECT

A little over two years ago Dr Peter Davies, Honorary Historian of the Halifax Cricket League received a £43,400 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund to enquire into the heritage and social history of cricket in Calderdale, a brief which was extended to encompass Kirklees and ultimately Cleckheaton Cricket Club.

Peter who teaches History at the University of Huddersfield acquired a further £7,000 funding from the university and the project began. Although a Lancashire supporter, with the able assistance of Rob Light who became a research assistant on the project and numerous other helpers which included Lee Booth who took on board the website and Sue Brant who travelled around the clubs producing line drawings to support the project, he attacked the project with enthusiasm.

The drawing below depicting the Cleckheaton Cricket Ground is one of Sue Brant's line drawings which can obtained by contacting her by email at susan@brant5.wanadoo.co.uk , by telephoning 01484 607081 or from the Club. Both A5 Unframed prints and packs of 10 notelets cost £ 5.00 each.

The enthusiasm of Dr Davies and his team has seen exhibitions staged for most of the teams he has researched. The exhibits relating to our club were on show at Spenborough Library until Christmas of 2005. All the exhibits are now owned by our club and will periodically be on dispay in our clubhouse. The project has spawned several interesting publications of data and photographs which can be ordered by visiting the Cricket Heritage website.

This website is a phenominally comprehensive site covering a pictorial history of all the clubs researched, and it is well worth clicking on the links below; but be prepared to spend a few hours on this wonderful site.

        John Wood dismissing
.....England's Michael Vaughan

John Wood, the former Durham and Lancashire fast bowler has agreed to remain as skipper for the 2009 & 2010 seasons.

Speaking about his thoughts on next season he hopes that his players will show more consistancy the lack of which let the team down on several occassions. He feels that his players should not fear any team in the league, particularly after their exploits during last season when they beat the eventual champions Woodlands twice before finishing in a creditable, if disappointing 6th place and in reaching the semi final of the Priestley Cup after fighting their way to the final in 2007. Details of our "new look" team for the coming season will be located in the "2009 Season" page as soon as it is finalised.

John Wood has agreed to skipper the Moorenders for a 5th season in 2009.

      Born at Crofton, Wakefield
...on 22nd July 1970.
At the end of the 2004 season, Lancashire decided not to renew his contract. The quick bowler had joined
the Red Rose county from Durham in 2001, and had received his county cap in 2003. He has career-best first-class bowling figures of seven for 58, and a top score of 64.

The Lancashire Cricket Manager Mike Watkinson said: "John has given excellent service to the club and I would like to wish him all the best in his future career."
