BANKFOOT. 121 All Out.

Mohammad Zaman 10-2-25-3, Craig Thornton 10-2-20-2, John Wood 8-2-18-1, Iain Wardlaw 10-3-25-1, Ian Wood 8.4-1-33-1.

CLECKHEATON. 125 for 6 Wkts.
Mohammad Zaman 72no, Extras 26.
Greg Colehan 5.1-1-19-2, James Lee 10-1-40-2, Andrew Deegan 4-1-23-1, Nigel Hanson 8-0-40-1.

As a result of tossing up and exchanging teams just before the downpour arrived on the day scheduled to play this tie, both teams on starting the game on the Monday found themselves with selection problems. Bankfoot were the most disadvantaged finding that only 9 of their nominated players were available to play whilst Cleckheaton similarly could only call on 10 of their selected team.

Both teams had to bite the bullet knowing that even more selection problems lay in wait if the game was to continue during the week. So both decided to play on a barely fit wicket. Cleckheaton had already won the toss on the Sunday, so Bankfoot began their innings on an extremely damp wicket. If Cleckheaton had expected the strip to misbehave they soon found otherwise, for although slow it should have posed no serious problems to the batsmen. Craig Johnstone and Simon Curry opened slowly with Johnstone taking the initiative before Iain Wardlaw beat him for pace and bowled him for 16 with the score on 18. Seven balls later John Wood found the edge of Curry's bat who was caught low down at slip by Craig Thornton. Despite this early breakthrough the bowlers were having to work hard to find any advantage in the wicket as skipper for the day Mike Hutchins and South African overseas Garreth Von Hoesslin dug in and forced the visitors into bowling changes.

Occasional bowler Craig Thornton performing in the absense of unavailable Craig Wiseman joined Ian Wood in managing to stifle the run rate. Their efforts resulted in restricting the home side to 93 runs from 36 overs with just the further loss of the South African on 37. It was Mohammad Zaman, having replaced Ian Wood, who finally forced the important breakthrough that left Bankfoot in array. Zaman's two wickets in consecutive balls after Thornton had bowled the aggressive James Lee left Bankfoot on the brink at 99 for 6, and it wasn't too long before, at 121 for 8, they were all out.

It was only four years earlier that the Moorenders had met Bankfoot in the Priestley Cup, and on that occasion had bowled them out for 125 only to fall themselves for a meagre 77. It soon became apparent that a similar fate might await the visitors as the drying wicket suddenly became a difficult obstacle to combat, and in fact only Zaman came to terms with its vagaries. Opening the batting he carried his bat for a impressive 72 not out, with the only other meaningful contribution coming from the 26 extras. Had Zaman not been in such good form the required total may well have been well beyond the visitors capabilities for the seven other batsmen who came to the crease could only total 27 runs between them.

In the end, thanks to Zaman's 91 ball innings of 72 which included 11 4's and 2 6's, Cleckheaton had claimed a hard earned victory and are in the hat for the second round at a plucky Bankfoot's expense.

CLECKHEATON vs SALTAIRE at Moorend

CLECKHEATON (5-Points)
160 All Out
Ian Nicholson 53, Craig Thornton 32, Iain Wardlaw 19, Louis Aspeling 16.
Tuseif Arshad 15-1-54-4, Javid Umarji 1-1-0-2, Nadim Mohammed 14-4-47-2, Ijaz Khan 14-3-48-2.

SALTAIRE. (17-Points)
163 for 6 Wickets.
Awais Ijaz 50, Aftab Ahmed 20, Javid Umarji 20, Tom Slater 16, George Hicks 15, Tom Forster 14no.
John Wood 6-0-16-2, Craig Wiseman 10-0-46-2.

On paper, Cleckheaton should have won this match. They were playing a team that had been comprehensively beaten the previous week, and still waited the arrival of their overseas man, Indian Rahul Kanwat, a right hand bat and spin bowler. For this match they were also without Tim Lindley, their new signing from Brighouse. Saltaire, a club not unlike ourselves with a wealth of junior talent available, had included three such juniors in their side. The Moorenders, themselves, were without their influential leg spinner Tom Pringle.

In a quest for batting bonus points, Cleckheaton decided to bat on winning the toss and the decision looked a wise one as they raced to 26 from the first 4 overs, but then youngster Tuseif Arshad struck taking 3 wickets in 8 balls to reduce the Moorenders to 34 for 3 with the scalps of openers Mally Nicholson, overseas Louis Aspeling, and Mohammad Zaman. Neil Nicholson then came to the crease to join his son Ian, and together they began to repair the innings. They had doubled the score to 68 before Neil was caught behind. Ian was then joined by Craig Thornton and the pair began to take command of the innings. A hundred came up in the 29th over and with Thornton looking particularly impressive, the home side seemed to be heading towards a 200+ score. Still looking to dominate the bowling, whilst his partner was more careful, it was still a surprise when Thornton played one aggressive shot too many, with the total on 122, and holed out in the deep for 32. His innings contained 3 4's and 2 6's. With both John and Ian Wood still to follow the momentum seemed unlikely to drop, but the situation changed dramatically when Nadim Mohammed took "2-in-2" removing both Wood brothers, and then Ijaz Khan trapped Edward Walmsley in front leaving Cleckheaton on 136 for 8. A brisk 19 from Iain Wardlaw helped push the total to 160 in the 43rd over with still an outside chance of reaching 200. The introduction of Umarji, however, finished off the home team's inning dramatically with both Wardlaw and then Ian Nicholson falling to lofted catches to leave Cleckheaton all out for 160 with 6 overs of the innings still available. Javid finished with 2 wickets for no runs.

Players and spectators alike perceived that Cleckheaton had enough runs to win the match, and this belief was upheld when Wiseman trapped the reliable Wasim Munawar with the 4th ball of his first over with the total on 4, but he was the only Saltaire batsman not to reach double figures. Although Cleckheaton picked up wickets at regular intervals, they were never in a winning position as every batsman contributed. With 56 overs available, there was never any scoring pressures, and as well as the bowlers bowled Saltaire were always totally committed in their approach which inevitably brought them a deserved victory.

The pick of the visitors' batting was Awais Ijaz who looked like he would personally steer his team to victory until Zaman beat and bowled him the ball after he had reached a 57 ball half century, and with no batsman prepared to give up his wicket cheaply they comfortably reached their target with 6 overs and 4 wickets to spare. Whilst Ijaz's fifty, which included 6 fours, was the pick of the batters, Umarji and Ahmed with 20 runs each made important contributions, and young Tom Forster, who hit the winning four, was unbeaten at the end with 14 after a stay at the wicket of almost an hour.

BRIGHOUSE vs CLECKHEATON at Russell Way.

BRIGHOUSE (1-Point)
119 for 8 Wickets
Faisal Butt 29, Gary Garner 25, Charles Boucher 19.
Tom Pringle 15-3-33-3, Craig Wiseman 10-4-24-2.

CLECKHEATON. (14-Points)
120 for 2 Wickets.
Mally Nicholson 50no, Louis Aspeling 36, Mohammad Zaman 16no.
Nick Kennedy 9-0-35-1, Dave Ryan 6-0-35-1.

Cleckheaton started a delayed season with a game away to a much changed Brighouse side captained by ex Luddendenfoot player Dave Ryan. In the circumstances skipper John Wood, in view of the unsettled weather, decided to ball first after winning the toss. The bowlers initially met some resistance from the home side's opening pair of New Zealander James Crighton and Charles Boucher. It was not until the 10th over that the Cleckheaton bowlers struck. The more aggressive of the pair Boucher on 19 played a false shot against Craig Wiseman and holed out to Ian Wood at mid wicket. After a solid innings spanning 57 minutes overseas man Crighton with only 5 runs to his name edged Ian Wood to the veteran Neil Nicholson at 2nd slip. Faisal Butt, with a couple of big sixes lifted the momentum, as he became Brighouse's highest scorer with 29. With Gary Garner he pushed the total to 75 before becoming this season's first victim of last season's leading wicketkeeper Mally Nicholson. Garner was the next to go for 25 falling to a fine boundary catch by Iain Wardlaw with the total now having reached 85 in the 36th over. This wicket signalled the end of any aspirations Brighouse might have had. Tom Pringle was now well into a 15 over stint that was to cost him only 33 runs and the home team's prime objective was purely self-preservation. The last 15 overs produced a meagre 34 runs, 10 of which came from Wiseman's final over, and when the overs finally ran out Brighouse had finished on a very disappointing 119 for 8 wickets. All Cleckheaton's bowlers played their part in restricting their opponents to such a meagre total especially Pringle (15-3-33-3) and (10-4-24-2).

On a very slow and unresponsive wicket, Cleckheaton might have struggled had their opponents had bowlers of a similar calibre to themselves; but they hadn't. In fact, their bowling looked distinctly weak for a 1st Division outfit and the visitors were able to knock off the required runs with very few scares. With only Nick Kennedy able to put any pressure on the batsmen, opener Mally Nicholson timed his knock to perfection bringing up his 50 from 70 balls with hardly enough time for his team mates to take a collection before the match was won. Nicholson shared an opening stand of 73 with South African Louis Asperling before the overseas man disappointingly got out to a poor ball from Kennedy. Ian Nicholson (10) was then unfortunate with an lbw decision before Mohammad Zaman's unbeaten 16 saw the visitors home with 24 overs remaining. Next week's game at home to Saltaire will be a far more competitive match.
